What is a Customer Journey?

The definition of the customer journey (also known as a sales funnel) refers to the process that a customer is lead through when researching companies or purchasing products. A customer journey is divided into several steps, which will differ depending on your market segment, product types, or business model.

Here is an example of a customer journey divided into six parts:

  • Awareness is where your prospects become aware of your existence and of the product or solution you provide.
  • Interest is where your prospects show their interest in your product / solution by conducting research. This is also typically the first interaction between you and your lead. Providing high value content for them to download is crucial to starting the conversation.
  • Evaluation / Indoctrination is what happens next when your prospects start to examine your competitors’ solutions as they inch toward a final buying decision. At this moment is when we make sure to stay top of mind by continuing the conversation through specially tailored email sequences that deepen the new relationship forming between you and your lead.
  • Conversion happens when your customer / lead makes a decision to buy from you. This can be a low dollar purchase, a membership trial, or a paid sales call. All that matters is their transition from lead to buyer.
  • Core Purchase is where we ascend your new buyer to the product or service they have been showing interest in. Once you get someone to pay you once it is much easier to get them to buy again (provided you are giving great value).
  • Retention / Reactivation is where we continue to engage the new customer. Sometimes your customer will drift away or become enticed with your competitors. This is why it is important to stay top of mind by continuing to provide value to your customers after purchase. Retaining them is done by cross selling them on other relevant products and services or reactivating them after a lull in purchasing.

Recapture & Direct Leads Through Your Funnel With Retargeting

Retargeting, also known as remarketing, is a leading edge form of online targeted advertising. Retargeting can help you keep your brand / product / service in front of bounced traffic (leads who have left your website without taking action). Only 2% of web traffic converts on the first visit in most cases, so not following the rest leaves money on the table. Retargeting is a tool designed to help companies reach the 98% of users who don’t convert right away.

HOW DOES RETARGETING WORK?

Retargeting is a cookie-based technology that uses simple Javascript code to anonymously ‘follow’ your audience all over the Web.

Here’s how it works: you place a small, unobtrusive piece of code on your website (this code is sometimes referred to as a pixel). The code, or pixel, is unnoticeable to your site visitors and won’t affect your site’s performance. Every time a new visitor comes to your site, the code drops an anonymous browser cookie. Later, when your cookied visitors browse the Web, the cookie will let your retargeting provider know when to serve ads, ensuring that your ads are served only to people who have previously visited your site. Retargeting is so effective because it focuses your advertising spend on people who are already familiar with your brand and have recently demonstrated interest.

WHEN DOES RETARGETING WORK?

Retargeting is a powerful branding and conversion optimization tool, but it works best if it’s part of a larger digital strategy.

Retargeting works best in conjunction with inbound and outbound marketing or demand generation. Strategies involving content marketing, AdWords, and targeted display are great for driving traffic, but they don’t help with conversion optimization. Conversely, retargeting can help increase conversions, but it can’t drive people to your site. Your best chance of success is using one or more tools to drive traffic and retargeting to get the most out of that traffic.

Creative

Lead Magnets are a great way to get your company into the hands and minds of your potential leads. Customers value actionable information that is finely targeted directly at their pain or need. We can help you develop ebooks, infographics, checklists, and guides that will capture your lead's attention.

Technical

There is a lot of technology to navigate when developing the customer's journey. Designing squeeze/opt-in, tripwire, thank you, and up-sell pages can be complicated. What software to use? How to integrate it to your email auto responder? You could go it alone, but since we have been right where you are, why not let us help you.

Automated

Sure you could sit there and wait for every opt-in, copy and paste them into your email lists, reply and attach your pdf lead magnet, but only if you don't have a life. Utilizing different platforms and softwares to communicate with your leads and customers, tagging them when they visit your site, segmenting your lists based on interests, and automating the process, you will watch your numbers steadily grow.
