What is a Customer Journey?

The definition of the customer journey (also known as a sales funnel) refers to the process that a customer is lead through when researching companies or purchasing products. A customer journey is divided into several steps, which will differ depending on your market segment, product types, or business model.

Here is an example of a customer journey divided into six parts:

  • Awareness is where your prospects become aware of your existence and of the product or solution you provide.
  • Interest is where your prospects show their interest in your product / solution by conducting research. This is also typically the first interaction between you and your lead. Providing high value content for them to download is crucial to starting the conversation.
  • Evaluation / Indoctrination is what happens next when your prospects start to examine your competitors’ solutions as they inch toward a final buying decision.   • Conversion happens when your customer / lead makes a decision to buy from you. This can be a low dollar purchase, a membership trial, or a paid sales call. All that matters is their transition from lead to buyer. 
  • Core Purchase is where we ascend your new buyer to the product or service they have been showing interest in. Once you get someone to pay you once it is much easier to get them to buy again (provided you are giving great value).

This is why it is important to stay top of mind by continuing to provide value to your customers after purchase. Retaining them is done by cross selling them on other relevant products and services or reactivating them after a lull in purchasing.
